Contact stresses- Ball Bearing




The objective here is to determine the max pressure at the surface of contact between the sphere and the outer ring. For this case a 3D simulation is not necessary. For faster solution a 2D axisymmetric setup was performed.

Modeling aspects include the following:

  • Non-linear analysis
  • Contact set-up between elastic bodies
  • Frictionless surface (on contact)
  • Small strains
  • Elastic bodies
  • 2D planar behavior (axisymmetric conditions)

The Ball diameter is 1.5 in and the radius of groove=1 in. In addition the greatest compressive force on one ball is 5000 lb.
